4 Tips To Give A Chain Link Fence A Custom Look, Add Lighting And Exterior Electricity

If you want to have a fence installed around your home, chain link fencing is one of the most affordable options. It is also one of the plainest fencing you can have installed. You may want to make your fence a little more attractive, and while you are doing this, you can add lighting and electricity. Here are some tips to give your chain link fence a custom design, lighting and electrical service:

1. Trimming Out Fence Sections With Wood Framing

If you want to give your chain link fence more of a custom look, you can frame out the sections with wood materials. This can be done with materials like treated pine, cedar or tropical lumber. You will just want to cut pieces to box in every section of fence. If you have top rails on the fence, they can be removed and replaced with tension cables and the wood to frame in the sections.

2. Adding Conduit To Fence For Electrical Installations

Before you continue with your fence customization, you may want to run conduit along the fence line for electrical wiring. Everywhere there is a post, you will want to install a T in the conduit where lights or outlets can be installed.  This will allow you to add an extra piece of conduit for the posts and other areas where you want to add electricity.

3. Casing Posts In Wood For A More Attractive Finish

If you want to have lighting and electrical outlets, casing the posts can be a great feature to add to your fence. This can be done by building wood boxes around the metal fence posts. Before you do this, you may want to find the post caps you want to use and measure them, which will give you the dimensions you need when building the boxes to cover the posts.

4. Installing Post Caps And Adding Electrical Outlets

Once you have the woodwork done, you will be ready to add the electrical installation. The first thing that will need to be done is pulling the wire through the conduit. Where post caps are located, you will want to add a piece of conduit inside the box. You may want to add some outdoor outlets to the posts, which you can get boxes for GFI outlets that can be added to the conduit.
